A Pair of Blue Eyes' claim to fame is that it is the book that brought us the term "cliffhanger". It was first published as a serialized novel, and one of the chapters ends with a man literally dangling off the edge of a remote cliff with no trees or rope in sight as a rescue aid and his only hope the brawn of his young woman companion/5.

A Pair of Blue Eyes contains obvious prototypes for later novels like The Return of the Native (Stephen Smith being similar to Clym Yeobright) and Tess of the d'Urbervilles (Henry Knight, a most dislikeable character on a par with the hypocritical Angel Clare). However, it has a charm all of its own, with possibly the most ingenious ending of Cited by: A Pair of Blue Eyes is one of his earlier works and despite this I found myself really enjoying the plot.

I was also interested to learn that this book was where the term "cliffhanger" originated from because in one of the scenes Henry Knight is literally left hanging from a cliff/5(53).
